We are fortunate to live in a time when the world is truly at your fingertips.  From your computer you can find information about anything you can imagine. You can communicate with people on the other side of the world.  You can tap into the resources of the world's most powerful computers,  search the world's best libraries,  tour the world's most amazing museums.  You can listen to music,  watch videos,  read poetry and any newspaper or magazine by simply tapping into the world's largest computer network--the Internet.

The Internet isn't a single network;  it is a vast, globe-spanning network of computers.  No single person, group, or organization runs the Internet.  You might think of it as a sort of electronic democracy,  a virtual United Nations of computer networks all linked together.  The largest most well known segment of the Internet is the fast growing World Wide Web.

It is my intention,  during the course of the year to help my students learn to use this valuable resource while researching the history they will be learning. I have listed links to some of my favorite search engines and have also included an Internet Glossary of terms the students are will be using to identify vocabulary words they will keep in their journals.  It is my hope that the information in the journals will be a reference guide they will use throught their high school years.   I hope you find the information useful.

A search engine is a computer program used to find information on the World Wide Web (WWW) when you do not know a specific URL (Web address) or when you are searching to see if any websites exist on a particular subject.  The search engines to the left are some of the most popular.  Each search engine uses different searching techniques and come up with different results.  Since no one search engine can store all of the information on the WWW,  it is a good idea to used more than one engine when researching a topic.
Cataloging sites, such as AltaVista and Lycos maintain there own indexes (catalogues) of Web sites or individual Web pages.
Review sites, such as Excite and Magellan, prepare reviews and ratings of Web sites snd summaries of the sites that match your request.
Category sites,  such as Infoseek, Yahoo, Yahooligans, and AskJeeves,  organize sites by categories and present a list of pages in categories related to your search inquiry. (I find this type of search engine the easiest to use).
Directory sites,  such as Yahoo People Search and Yahoo Yellow Pages,  list phone numbers,  web addresses, and email addresses.
